911³Ō¹Ļ’s Lifelong Learning Society Jupiter has announced its lecture and performance offerings for the ā€œ2016 Opening Week,ā€ which begins Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017.

911³Ō¹Ļ’s Lifelong Learning Society Jupiter has announced its lecture and performance offerings for the ā€œ2017 Opening Week,ā€ which begins Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017. All offerings will take place in the Lifelong Learning Society complex at 911³Ō¹Ļ’s John D. MacArthur Campus, 5353 Parkside Dr., in Jupiter.

Taught by 911³Ō¹Ļ professors and distinguished guest lecturers, ā€œPerforming Arts Weekā€ classes include topics such as music, history, film and literature. The Lifelong Learning Society was established to provide adults of all ages the opportunity to enrich their lives through non-credit, university-level courses with no homework or tests.

ā€œOpening Weekā€ events include:

  • ā€œJoan Rivers: Behind the Mask of Comedy,ā€ on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m., presented by Carol Clarke, co-founder of ā€œWords…Alive!ā€ a Readers Theatre group, will dramatize the back story of Joan Rivers. ā€œThe Book of Joanā€ by Melissa Rivers, Joan’s autobiography ā€œEnter Talkingā€ and ā€œStill Talkingā€ provide the background for this dramatic reading.
  • ā€œThe Great American Dance Band: 1920-1950,ā€ on Tuesday, Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m., performed by Aaron Kula and the Klezmer Company Orchestra, and will feature music from the 911³Ō¹Ļ Libraries’ ā€œDance Combo Collection.ā€
  • ā€œWhat’s Up Doc? The Lives and Careers of Dr. Phil and Dr. Ozā€ on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 11 a.m., presented Myrna Goldberger, will present a lecture focused on the lives and careers of these two doctors.
  • ā€œRussian Piano Fireworks: Music by Tchaikovsky and Mussorgsky,ā€ on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m., presented byĀ  Sofia Uryvayeva, D.M.A., a pianist and graduate of the Odessa Stolyarsky Special Music School, will perform two of the most famous and captivating piano suites written: Mussorgsky’s ā€œPictures at an Exhibitionā€ and Tchaikovsky’s ā€œNutcracker.ā€
  • ā€œThe Songs of Elvis Presleyā€ on Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 7 p.m., performed by Rod MacDonald and The Humdingers, a local band in Palm Beach County, which will feature music by Elvis Presley.
  • ā€œMajor Intelligence Issues for the New Administrationā€ on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 11 a.m., presented by James B. Bruce, Ph.D., a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation, where he leads research projects for U.S. government clients. This lecture will examine key intelligence issues that the new presidential administration will encounter.
  • ā€œBlues, Barrelhouse and Ragtime,ā€ on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m., performed by Robert Milne, a French horn virtuoso and pianist who has played with the Rochester Philharmonic and Baltimore Symphony, will feature music from the blues genre.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā
